Here at Drain Doctor, we have seen and heard some really strange things pertaining to plumbing and DIY techniques. With the advent of the internet has come an overabundance of tips and advice for plumbing that simply are not true. Here are some plumbing myths that you should not believe or put into practice. If you have any particular questions or concerns, call us today and allow one of our friendly staff to help.
Lemons to Freshen the Garbage Disposal
If life gives you lemons, whatever you do, do not toss them into the garbage disposal. There is a myth running around that suggests dropping a lemon in the garbage disposal will freshen it, but that’s only half the story. Sure, the lemon may give off its citric smell, but at what cost? Garbage disposals will likely not shred the lemon into as little of pieces that you think they will. Peels can cause issues down the line by clogging pipes and drains.
A Brick in the Toilet to Save Water
There are water efficient toilets that are designed to use less water when flushed, but some people have tried to take a shortcut. The water-saving “hack” that they suggest involves placing a brick in the water tank of the toilet so that the toilet does not use as much water. The first issue with this “trick” is that you now have less water to flush with and can end up having to flush more than once. Secondly, the brick will eventually break down and can cause some serious issues.
Flushable wipes, like flushable litter, are not biodegradable. If they do not break down in water, then they do not belong in the toilet. The only things that should be flushed are the 3 P’s: pee, poop, and (toilet) paper. Anything else can clog your toilet and give you a headache.
Bleach Tank Tablets
Toilet cleaning can be a gross chore, which is why some people have opted to use toilet cleaning tablets. In theory, you would drop the tablet into the toilet tank and let it do the work. In reality, these tablets often contain bleach, which can erode your toilet over time.
Toilets Flush in The Other Direction in Australia
This myth is harmless, but we are here to get the record straight. Cyclones do, in fact, rotate in different directions depending on if they are in the Northern or Southern hemisphere, but this is not the same for toilet flushes. Instead, the direction toilets drain depends on the jets.
Ice Cubes to Sharpen Garbage Disposal Blades
People have recommended using ice cubes to clean garbage disposals, which is true to some extent. Ice cubes will not sharpen garbage disposal blades for one small reasons: garbage disposals do not have blades. Instead, garbage disposals have teeth-like grinders called impellers.
